Alternate Routes and a Sunset Picnic
I planned to walk to Burgos today, 23km away. I decided to start at 6am. The cafe in town and the kitchen in my albergue were both supposed to be open at 6, so I should have been able to get either hot water for my instant coffee OR a coffee from the cafe. Alas, no one was up or open at 6. I walked 2.5km to the next town before I found an open cafe. Ah, well-earned coffee!
It was still dark as I left this town, and soon I found myself climbing. I did not look at the elevation profile before leaving. Alas! This climbing came as a surprise. On the plus side, I reached the summit for sunrise, which was glorious!
On the way down, I took an alternate route that steered away from the view of the open quarry, and went through a sleepy town instead. A short while later, I took another alternate. The historic route is now a highway, and I wanted to avoid 10km of road walking. There is an alternate that navigates to the river, and follows that into town. I was pleased with both choices, and did not get lost!
I’m staying in the massive municipal albergue.
It sleeps 160 people.
I found a supermarket and plan to carry food for tomorrow so I can cook in the next albergue, which has a kitchen.
I got a recommendation from the hosts at the last albergue to try ‘Gaia’ – a vegetarian restaurant in town. That is where I am at the moment. So far, the food is amazing!
After lunch, I decided to check out the Cathedral…I guess it is kind of a big deal? I did my first ever one of those audio tours. #tourist!! It really is a beautiful and cool building though.
My other recommendation from the host in Ages was to see the Castle Burgos. She said that the view was incredible. After running and hiding from some rain, I grabbed my food and headed up, up, up the many flights of stairs to the top of the hill. The Castle is mostly in ruins, but the view was incredible. You could see the whole city! And the massive cathedral. I had a very rad sunset picnic in a castle.
