Day 10 – Santa Domingo to Villambistia

Cold Mornings and an Afternoon Nap

I enjoy starting before first light because the sunrises really are great. Also, it is 12 degrees, which is beautiful. I’m currently sitting at a cafe in Granon, enjoying the cold, and having an espresso doble.

Leaving town was very picturesque, as the departure is a descent, so the view is vast. In the next town, I ran into Lucy (from Australia) and Liam (from Scotland). We walked together to the next town, it was already getting quite hot. They stopped for breakfast, and I pressed on to Belorado. Belorado had a very pretty Plaza Mayor, where I enjoyed another coffee and much needed foot rest.

I picked up a few grocery items.

Some of the grocery stores here seem to have a policy wherein customers cannot touch the produce. You ask for the items you want and an employee collects them and passes them over a counter to you, properly weighed and tagged. I was slow to figure this out, and got a finger wag in this grocery store – whoops! I really should have learned more Spanish! They are very kind about my pointing and gesturing to communicate what items I want. This is something I have never experienced in Canada or the USA, so it is new to me!

My final push from Belorado was 7km to the tiny town of Villambistia, where I booked a private room. It is day 10 of walking, it was a 30km day, and it was hot! The privacy was very welcome. I had a long shower and actually managed to take a nap! Glorious.

I had dinner at their little restaurant and enjoyed stretching on the grassy lawn.
