Day 9 – Najera to Santa Domingo

More experiments in cooking

After dinner last night, I agreed to meet Caitlin and Kathy at their Albergue in the morning to walk together. We were walking in the dark and it was quite chilly, which was great. The sunrise was incredible!

Obviously, we stopped in the first town (Azofra) for coffee. From there it was an additional 10km to the next town! (Ciruena). Of course, we got more coffee. It was only 6km more to our final destination of Santa Domingo de la Calzada. We were only briefly delayed by sheep crossing.

The Albergue here is beautiful. It is massive, but it has a really nice common area with tables and a kitchen. There is a back garden and it is nestled in the narrow streets. There are chickens here as well.

This town had a thing about chickens.

I went to the grocery store in search of things to make dinner. Last night I learned the word for ‘hazelnut’ in Spanish because of Caitlin’s birthday dessert. This served me well today when I spotted HAZELNUT GELATO in a little shop, and of course I got some.

On the theme of ‘cooking new things’, I decided to try to make mango sticky rice. I already had a mango (19 cents!!) Which I carried all day, so it needed to be eaten. I also had paella rice, not sticky rice, but whatever! Close enough!

It tastes pretty good. I believe when my friend made it for us, she poured condensed milk over it, which I also don’t have.

Dessert for dinner!
