My Take on the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

I took the ‘other disciplines’ FE Exam back when it was paper/pencil format. I was actually over a year out of school when I took it, and this was definitely more challenging as lots of the topics hadn’t been covered since my first year classes. This meant I really needed good FE exam study resources, and a solid study approach.

I approached the FE in a similar way to the PE – a heavy focus on working problems. The major difference being that I could not take any of my own materials into the exam with me. To help with this, I also wrote up ‘summary sections’ for each exam topic. They would have been really nice to bring along (obviously) but the act of writing them is actually a great study tool. I advocate writing this down vs. just reading things as much as possible!

What I mean by this, is that I would literally write jot notes and ‘process steps’ notes out for each subject. Creating sort of a ‘cheat sheet’ per subject. This really helped me internalize what I was reading, and summarize the steps I was learning for problem solving.

I plan to expand on this write up in the future when I have time to put something useful together, but suffice it to say that if my approach to the PE resonates with you, I approached the FE in a similar way.

FE Exam Study Resources I used:

– I only used the FE Review Manual by Lindeburg as far as ‘books’ go.    (PPi Link – use this tagged link for 15% off eligible products)
– I used the Casio fx-115 calculator  (see here for calculator tutorials)
– I used my own school notes for most of the math subjects, as first year math courses covered most of that subject matter.

FE Exam Study Resources:

I actually did some research and read reviews/stories from other test-takers to provide this curated list of resources. Get your NCEES review material from NCEES themselves (not amazon), then check out the resources below!

Resources from Universities:

Coursera (Georgia Tech) – Free online course, FE Civil and FE Mechanical
Marshall University – FE Civil
Texas A&M – You can download the videos & notes BUT it looks like the ‘’Joseph de la Fuente’’ videos are the same stuff)
Colorado School of Mines – It appears you can download the review notes from the review course
Purdue – search ‘FE Review’ on their website and you will find some resources available from a few disciplines

Are you taking the Mechanical FE?

If you are taking the Mechanical FE, I would recommend you check out Engineering Pro Guides FE exam study resources, including the ‘prep course.’ If I had known about this material when I was taking the exam, I 100% would have used it! I listed it above but want to mention it specifically here since I found his PE material so useful, I assume his FE material is also awesome.

Long after creating this website, I created amazon affiliate links for all the products I used, because I just learned that you can do that! I’m hopeful that it can help me cover the (relatively small) costs of hosting, and renewing this domain every year. All in it costs me ~$85 per year. This is the language they asked me to use; ” As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”
